I want to play with netfilter/iptables.
As such I need to update my kernel.

iptables's INSTALL says I need 2.4.4

netfilter.org says I need 2.4.x

kernel.org says the latest stable is 2.4.19

I've seen posts from other netfilter users here, I don't think everyone was runing 2.4.4. Just wanted to be sure what kernel is required, if anyone knows. Thanks!

Netfilter is part of the main stable tree, starting in 2.4, that's why netfilter.org says 2.4.x. So get any 2.4 kernel will have netfilter options when you do do a make xconfig or make menuconfig. There used to be patches for the 2.2 kernel tree so they could use netfilter, but I don't know if the patches are still available.

Ok, that makes sense. But here's a dumb question:

On a clean 2.2.20 install of debian iptables didn't seem to work for me. Like-

sudo iptables -L

gives me a bunch of noise about modprobe not being able to find module ip_tables or my kernel needs upgrading, etc.

I got the iptables source, built it into the kernel source, picked it in menuconfig, compiled then iptables -L worked. I'm probably confused, but are you saying netfilter is supposed to work out of the box?

(this is on another machine if your wondering why it quit working)

Plus, is all you need for netfilter is "Network packet filtering"? Thanks again

sounds like the modules weren't built for the default kernel, but you fixed that the second time around. As far as working out of the box, I was referring to a RH install. I know Debian is sort of conservative as far as adding features, so maybe that's why it didn't work the first time.
unfortunately, i don't have a kernel config in front of me. check the help section. sorry for the lame answer
