Sounds like there's a problem with the way the kernel has been built - did you notice any errors when you were doing so? Are you able to back out to an earlier Linux/Unix version and try again? Sorry this isn't much help, but post back with any errors etc and someone will probably be able to help you. One final thought - can you boot from CD and try to mount the root fs from there? Cheers.
