Another question, for all your gurus,
I have a old system has 12GB memory on a 32bit machine (don't ask me why or how...it just does : ) Which linux kernel can get me to take advantage of the full 12GB of memory? Or am I limited to 8GB only like windoze? Any suggestion would be welcome, Thank you very much.

Wellwellwell.

Did you install the kernel-sources?
Do you have a .config - file?

Using menuconfig you may reconfigure your kernel.
The whole process is beyond this scope, but here are the essential steps:

Follow the README file in the kernel-source.
In make menuconfig , you visit point 5, 'processor type and features'.

In Section "High Memory Support" you choose 64 GB.
(8GB is not an option, 4GB is).

Exit, exit, save - and follow the readme file.

Stefan handled your Q:.

The 8GB windoze limit is IMHO a technically implemented functional limit used solely as a marketing tool to get you to trade up an OS level to meet the hardware capability artificially required by bloated code on the Win platform.

Linux ain't perfect, but it's far less abusive in helping users leverage their investment.

yeah thanks, it does not appear to be a problem in ubuntu server 7.04, it took 20 minutes to install and recognized the right size of ram right away. oh boy..
