Does one NEED to use a shielded Kentrox cable between the demarc and the router or can you use a straight thru ethernet Cat5? GoOdwEb's Internet Cafe

Getting the sec on these is not that easy. These two boxes can be separated by up to 200 meters of quality 2-pair cable-- though Kentrox pre-sales or applications support says that a V.35 cable feeds routers. Then the limit is about 50 feet.

I have seen "custom" interconnecting cables (actually, just CAT 5 patch cables with a custom label) connecting T-1 NIUs to telephone equipment and the client was billed $112.00 each !!!

Can you mount the Kentrox box in your server room, by just extending the incoming WAN cabling? The T-1 or frame relay is more robust and designed to handle lower grade (telephone outside plant) cables.

The telephone company may like to put it in the MPOE, but it is not required. Placing it in the client's server room is called the "extending" the demarc. The classic demarcation point is no longer a single, physical point.

If you get the Kentrox box from another service provider with a Service Level Agreement, they may give you a Kentrox managed CSU/DSU (DataSmart), which has an IP address and a LAN port, so you can see the incoming data and each T-1 channel. This is a huge help when things start to gum up because it identifies the trouble to be on the outside or on the inside. Otherwise people are in the dark and just point fingers.

Best,
Mike

The channel interface and demarc is about 35 feet from the kentrox box and router (Cisco 2501).. I ran a straight thru CAT5 between the demarc and the kentrox box, keeping away from all possible sources of noise and interferance. Sound OK?
