Keeping the formatting when exporting to Excel

After running my reports I need to export them to Excel. However when I do this I lose all formatting and they look boring. Exporting to Word is fine and the format stays the same. I am using Access/Excel 97 although I have tried with later versions and still get the same result. When exporting the 'Save formatted' box always defaults to ticked but this doesn't seem to make any difference.

Please help
