Can anyone direct me to a good faq or site which can explain the basic function and configuration of keepalives in Cisco routers and switches.

There is also keep alives on the ethernet ports. A good trick is to disable the keepalives on the etherport and then you can "bring up" the ethernet port even without anything plugged into it. Good for troubleshooting.

I first found this trick in the CCIE Study Guide Lab Book.. they use it to bring up ethernet ports during lab setups.

The question I have relates to communication between a router and a switch. The keepalives on the switch is not set and on the router is set to the default of 10 secs. The settings seem to work however there are communication delays sometimes and significant shutout periods.

I have always understood that the keepalives need to be the same at both ends of a link in order for communication to happen. I was after some literature which would explain the feature in more detail so I can understand what is happening.
