i have a dell insperon 2200.the original hitachi hard drive failed.installed a new one and loaded windows.keep getting the same message.i have tried this three times.anyonehave any ideas?

Is the replacement drive the same model and same size (Gb) as the old one? Did this new drive have anything else put on it before Windows?

Does the BIOS show this new drive correctly, and also show it as the first boot device?

How was Windows (XP?) loaded? From the CD, or an image?

You could try running a repair from the Windows CD. Also check that the (single?) partition is set to "Active".

Are you getting an beeps when you turn your pc on? Try adding a cd rom on the same cable and see if the pc recognizes it. If not, I would start thinking that the controller may have failed.

most new HDDs need to be formated as either a bootable or data drive.

did you do this?

First, is the drive visible in BIOS? if not remove it and reseat it, check for bent pins.
I would run DbaN on it to remove everything (run from CD...type "Autonuke")
Is the HDD included in the boot order? You want your boot order set to CD-ROM, then your HDD.

If the drive is visible in BIOS, 100% clean, second in boot order, you should be good to go.
