Hi,

I am trying to decide between suse 9.2 and redhat 9.0. I wonder which of them is better. What are the differences etween gnome and kde? Although, I am a newbie I'd like to use a powerful version of linux. Thanks for suggestions.

You first need to figure out what you are trying to accomplish before you start looking at software.

Why RedHat 9.0?
It's so old!
Fedora Core 4 is out now. Why not give that a go.
2.6 gigs on a DVD, you're bound to find something useful in that little lot!

Trojan.

SuSE 9.2 will run both GUIs. It defaults to Gnome, I believe.

suse defaults to kde- redhat/fedora defaults to gnome. any of the major distros will allow you to install and use both. You can try each out and see what you like best.

You can run programs from either on the other as well. I run kde as my desktop but use gnuCash for my personal finances, gimp and some others.

The only cost is the time to download and discs to burn. nice.

I know SuSE 9 & 9.1 default to KDE, I have heard that either 9.2 or 9.3 default to Gnome.
You can select which one you want at login in any case.

9.3 still defaults to kde- primarily due to customer demand according to Novelle. (with novelle buying suse and ximian I can see how people would thing they would move to gnome)

But the really important thing for people to understand is that it is really worth it to have both installed. (In my opinion). Unless you are really crunched for space and have a real focused purpose for the system.

There are also lighter windows managers if you are wanting to run a graphical desktop on older hardware.

You need to understand that GNOME and KDE are desktop environments, and are completely separate from the distribution, in your case, SUSE or Red Hat (go for Fedora Core, it's still Red Hat, just a new name. Plus, Red Hat is Hatred if you switch the words around).

Which is better, KDE or GNOME, is usually the topic of many trolls. In the end, it'll depend on your personal preference and what you expect out of a GUI. You need to try both.

.. I'm currently using KDE though :)
