As the title says what are the main differences and which would you recommend for a Windows user.

Cheers.

If think the only real difference is that one uses KDE (Kubuntu) and the other uses Gnome.

I'd probably recommend Ubuntu for a new user, simply because it's the most common. If you have a question or are following a guide, it's more likely to match up with what you have to do.

Carlsberg don't run I.T. departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

Generaly speaking, KDE as in Kubuntu, have a more
Windowish GUI that many former Win-users find easyer
to grasp than Gnome's interface ( in Ubuntu)
Most *buntu howto's are made for Ubuntu (Gnome) though.

You can install both Gnome and KDE (and other WindowManagers)
on the same Ubuntu-installation, so you can choose
what session you whant at bootup.

They're basically the same. By default Kubuntu uses KDE as mentioned. It's probably going to be a more comfortable transition for a windoze user. However, Gnome seems to have more tools by default. They can be installed on Kubuntu as can the inverse (KDE tools/GUI on Ubuntu). They use the exact same repositories for updates/upgrades, so the code base is the same. They follow the same upgrade path, so either is acceptable. I prefer Kubuntu simply because, I came from windoze, switched to Mandrake and really like KDE.

I have used Red Hat, Fedora, Ubuntu, and several others who default to Gnome as the window manager. They're completely user friendly, but I just like KDE better.

Good luck and welcome to the Linux world. We're always here to help (well most of us...)
