I will be offering professional services. I'm expecting my first client to be my previous employer. I'm still collecting office supplies. Can anyone recommend an accounting package? I saw the basic Intuit package, but I am wondering if that is a dumb choice. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I would speak to your CPA and see what he recommends. All of them will accept QuickBooks, but he may express a preference for some other package (Peachtree, maybe).

Don't have a CPA? You need one, especially if you're doing this after age 59-1/2 (big tax implications).

Chip is correct. If you live in the U.S., the government doesn't want you making to much money after retirement. Talk to a CPA. As far as an accounting package, it depends on what you do. I ran a complete gift shop for over 9 years and used an Excel spreadsheet I created and my accountant loved it. Good luck.

Yup. Dad did some consulting after he retired for his old firm, and at that time, the goverment took almost 50%, what with taxing what he earned, and the matching reduction in Social Security payments.

The laws are probably different today, which is why I strongly suggest talking to your CPA.
