Just how serious is the Russian password hack?

In case you haven't heard, there have been news reports that Russian hackers have stolen 1.2 billion Web credentials and half a billion email addresses. Now there are some questions about the validity of those reports. You can read about it in this InfoWorld article.

The first thing that came into my mind was, that the sniffers are installed and they are waiting for the whole world to change their passwords and sniff them all out.
