Just got XP Pro, 512 Megs of RAM, 1gHZ Intel. Booted from CD and formatted the disk with NTFS. It was copying setup files and freezes while copying driver.cab at 27%. I tried two different CD-roms and they both frreeze at the same point. There are no scratches on my new disk. Unhooked everything with the exception of the one main hard drive and a CD-ROM. Any suggestions. Thanks

Probably hardware problem - could be anything, needto start eliminating suspects (eg, start with RAM - if more than one stick, try each on its own - if configuration allows, remove network, sound, modem cards etc, CD writer...)

cadmancan,

You might try specifying the power profile, rather than letting XP try to auto-determine it.

When, early in the installation, XP prompts for additional disks for SCSI and RAID devices, hit F6 and manually select the advanced power profile that is appropriate.

See if any of these help you.

Run the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor.

You can use the Microsoft Windows XP Upgrade Advisor tool to audit the current status of your computer and get a report of known hardware and software compatibility issues (based on Microsoft testing before release).

Upgrade the Computer BIOS.

Before you start the install process, obtain and install the latest basic input output system (BIOS) upgrade for your computer from the computer manufacturer. If no Bios update is available set bios to original defaults. Make sure any Bios anti virus scanner is disabled.

If you've got USB devices, unplug them until you're done with the initial install, then plug them in and install them once the system is up and running.

There might be some help in these.
