mobo-gigabyte k8ns-pro
chip-athlon 64 3000+
o/s-win xp pro
ram-corsair pc3200
with a clean install of xp any hel woulp be very helpful.

In what quantities is the ram? 2X 1gig or 4X 512? check your motherboards manual for single sided/double sided and size configurations as well as checking if this ram is compatible.
Note* lots of motherboards have particular configurations for correct operation.
Does it read correctly if you remove one or more sticks.
Try swapping ram about but refere to that manual.

Make sure the memory you have is listed with the motherboard manufacturer as compatable. Not just the type but the make.

The answer has always been 42

hi thanks
the ram is compatable with the board its 2x512 1x1gb no sticks of 256! what if i boot up with 1 stick of 512 and if the pc picks it up then add the rest?

Like I said already, look in your manual for a memory chart pointing out Double Sided/Single Sided/ram size configurations.

This could be Stupid answer but are you sure you are reading the numbers correctly does it say 2423mb and or just 256mb? If that is case you really should check to see if your machine supports double sided memory!!

thanks for all your advice ive just updated the bios and hey presto it picked up the correct amount but under it says physical address extension could any please tell me what it means? many thanks

I read this at a site:
On CPUs that support No Execute, PAE is enabled if you enable /noexecute in boot.ini, even if you don't have /PAE. PAE mode is required to make room in the page table entry for the no-execute bit.

PAE in theory is needed when the system requires more than 4GB of memory address space (which is always going to be LARGER than the amount of RAM you have installed). So even though you only have 2GB of RAM, the No Execute feature that your CPU supports and other memory address sources (such as the pagefile) need the room on top of that 2GB. This creates the need for PAE to be turned on.
