A client asks if I can recover some pictures from an external hard drive after a virus got on his computer, I said I will try. When he bring in the desktop & external drive I am told the rest of the story. His Trojan was Cryptowall 3, he got from an email that had been opened, got his computer as well as the external drive. The problem is the computer had been cleaned up by the Webroot antivirus support group but they could not recover the external data, had the computer not been cleaned there were a few options, not now. There were 224gb of pictures from 1999 to present & no he did not have the $1000 to get the decrypt key. I called several recovery companies & they said they were unable to recover from Cryptowall infections.

Just too many eggs in one basket & not enough security.[sad]

Wow. Thanks for sharing. Sad story, but it's good to have those stories in memory when talking to folks.

I still think there should be a "IT test" before anyone is allowed to drive a computer with a minimum IT of 120 before they are allowed to take one home. [pc1]

Either that, or they should have to prove ownership of a twelve year old child

Umm, no. Stupidity, incompetence and inattention to detail are my little money makers.

I'm pretty sure we've all seen the high IQ people that just don't have the common sense to succeed in life. There are plenty like that in the IT business.

Agree with it but I consider it a bonus, not my main focus.
