Being 2/3rds through the guide by TCat that I got from
It became apparent that some of their questions are on material that they do not cover in the text. Annoying but not a huge biggie.

However they are selling an old guide - I downloaded the objectives from CompTia upon seeing very little on XP - and a whole lot on DOS. And sure enough, it's an old guide.

I wrote them to let them know my dissatisfaction and on one hand I like seeing the DOS for a better foundation - but I dislike the fact that it is without doubt a guide for an old exam.

Quite a surprise to me sitting here on a Sunday having spent the day with his A+ OS manual.

TCat answered my email. He explained (and this was a surprise to me) that some of his classroom students seem to be receiving questions on DOS or Win95 still. I didn't expect that, going off of CompTia's objectives it seemed to have been dropped.

But like I said before, it was a good foundation - and in his email to me, that seems to have been a major goal of his. And in my opinion an important one.

schase,

I took the A+ Core OS exam about six months ago, and had prepared by reading the Mike Meyers All-In-One book for both the 2001 objectives and the 2004 objectives.

I can't remember with perfect clarity, but I don't recall seeing any questions about DOS or Windows 95. It certainly wouldn't hurt to be prepared for some questions about older OS's, though.

Just barely got back from the test.

Passed with a 697, still not what I felt like I wanted to get, but it's a pass.

Interestingly enough, I did get some DOS and WIN95 questions. It didn't seem to hone in on one particuliar OS - mine was quite a spread.

Hey Thanks Wishdiak,

I'm not sure, I've been doing some serious swinging back and forth on either just going for CCNA or taking the MCSA first.

schase,

Having gone through the MCSA path, I would have preferred to get CCNA first. CCNA can be done in just one exam, but that's just me.

I hear that,

Question being - can one get the CCNA in one exam in less study time than the MCSA's 3

schase,

That's a debatable point. From what I've heard, the CCNA is extrememely difficult. My experience with the MCP exams required for MCSA is that they're not all that bad, for the most part.

I know people who have either one, but I don't personally know anyone with both.

Yeah same here,

Be interesting to hear Glister's input if he's got the time.

Lab manual?

Do you mean where you can simulate changing hardware or simulate what to do in an Operating system?

If that is what you are talking about - there was one called
LabSim for A+ Core hardware.

Only one I know of - but there are no simulations in the current version of either A+ Core or A+ OS

The reason I said lab manual is that I bought SYBEX book which says A+ complete Lab manual it is written by Donald Evans.I'm just concerned that My A+ cert book byDavid Groth might be out of date the copy right date is 2001 I bought them asa package from Banes and Noble Garrett

purebredprophet,

The most recent revision of the A+ objectives was in 2003.

If you have a book with a 2001 copyright, then your book was probably written for the 2001 objectives. Not that this would invalidate all of the information in a book, but you shouldn't rely on it for up-to-date information.

let me get this straightthen a book /course designed for 2005 would be what i am looking for?

Yea Wish is pretty well on top of it.

I agree, it would probably give you 80 odd percent of the info you need on the hardware side of things - and maybe 50-60 percent on the OS side.

But with the 2003 version networking is (from what I understand) much more pronounced than the 01 version.

IMHO - I would recommend the A+ For Real mega pack on studyexam4less.com It's worth it and really really solid base. Then pick up another book - Mike Meyers or a different Sybex one if you like them. Along with cram sheets and of course practice tests to access how your doing.

Except one thing I did with the OS I wish I did with the Hardware - don't take any practice tests until all of your major reading is out of the way. Depends on personal character but i'm the type that I would read a couple chapters than do practice tests. Problem was - I was missing the whole scope and trying to focus on potential problem areas. with the OS side I read the major guides, took practice tests, read the mid sized one from cramsession - bunch of practice tests then tried to hone in on areas I was weak.

2003 objectives is what is current.

With your other book having a publishing date of 2001 - it couldn't possibly meet the latest A+ version which is 2003 objectives.
