Jumping layout grid!

I'm placing tables on my layout grid. The tables contain photos and text in different cells. I'm used to using tables for layout from my HTML days with HotDog6. Is there some reason that tables can't work on the layout grid? Most days it's fine, but then, on other days (maybe the planets are aligned or it's a full moon) the layout grid doesn't like what I'm doing and keeps expanding and throwinging my tables to the right and down.

Any suggestions would be appreciated . . . Thanx.
