i have a bell outdoor phone box where the underground cable enters my home.it is about 4" square. it has 4 large stud terminals where the incoming underground cablesare connected. all my other lines are connected as well. i would like to replace it but have not found outdoor weather proof boxes that have 4 main terminals for my underground cable. what would you call this device and where can i find a replacement?

S.N.I.
-standard network interface
-subscriber network interface
-demarcation point
It is typically within your local phone companies purview to change out/ install the device, as it must be properly grounded. Just give them a call- and tell them why (insecure, broken, etc.)

That is not a junction box. Those blocks with the binding posts on them are surge protectors, one for each line. This belongs to the phone company and is serviced by them when necessary. If yours is in need of replacement give repair service a call and they will replace it at no cost.

Stymie,

As the other guys stated: that's called a protector. SNI as bkrike said is the crazy term we use for that tricky box. You're describing the old school variety with a flip top lid I believe... not sure why you'd want to replace it? It does its job just fine, the newer variety have snap in demarc modules, and a variety of other neat-o things... but they're plastic and they weather just as badly.

Your best bet is to call in a trouble ticket for a line and ask the IRT to replace it when he gets there. Some guys are nice and will do so, some will wonder why you're even bothering. That particular demarc only allows two lines, you might be able to get them to replace it if you talk about wanting to get a third line... they'd need to put in a six pair SNI anyhow for that.

also called a NID (Network Interface Device ) Its Telco property and you dont have the legal right to replace it .

like everybody else says they have to do it .

I have a box that fits what he describes and it isn't surge protection. The local cable company used it solely to splice my phone line when I switched from Bell to them for my long distance. I trashed it after I unsuscribed and went with satelite. Stymie, your situation may be different.

Very true bospruell. They have a flip lid as well, very commonly used to conceal drop splices. But... I'd have to say those are about 2inx2in, not 4x4

We have a bunch of those in stock, forget who they are made by. These "boxes" are used with different snap in modules. We use them with DSL filters but there are protectors and straight binding posts modules which can be used as Bospruell describes.
