JSP/JavaBean can not open a SSL connection on backend.

I was wondering if anyone has exp in developing application inside the WAS to access external application in SSL mode. I am trying to access an external LDAP server. No problem with the a pure java code but it does not work as JSP or JavaBean inside WAS. Can access LDAP server without SSL - but just hang with SSL. Running WAS 4.0.1.
