Hi all,

I've been trying to make a JPG image with a transparent background. I merged a few pictures into one using Ulead Photo Express and want to make the background transparent. Everytime I use the "Export Transparent Image" option, I get a new image with a grey background. I need it to be transparent for use online.

I'd appreciate your help on getting this done. I have Adobe Photoshop 7.0 with ImageReady 7.0.

Have a wonderful day,
VJ

Please wait for other more experienced user's more accurate responses, but can you convert the picture to a GIF? You're probably trying to get rid of that white matte surrounding the jpeg, and I think GIFs give you some transparency options.

You might either find a "GIF" format selection under the FORMATS when you save, or choose "SAVE TO WEB" from Photoshop 7.0

Jpeg's don't support transparency. You need to use gif or png file formats.

Thankyou for your replies. I tried Exporting it as a GIF which degraded the picture quality (8-bit colors only). PNG gives me the same grey background also.

Thankyou WJGrayson for your post - I tried the "Save For Web" option mentioned which works almost fine except for a white, jagged edge, outline around the images.

I tried erasing those white edges in MS Paint but it still doesn't look good. Any ideas?

Thankyou,
VJ

The white "jaggies" sometimes appear, depending on the type and resolution of the original. If the final output is PRINT, hit the print button to see if the jaggies are still there. Sometimes, it's just a screen font/display issue. I don't have any answers for you if it's for the web, unfortunately.

You can also save the file as a pdf file, but when you save, make sure to check the box that says something to the effect of "save or preserve transparency".

with the PNG, you must save for web as a PNG-24.

Also be aware that Internet Explorer doesn't fully support PNG alpha transparency - nearly every other browser does though!

To get Internet Explorer to fully render PNGs you will have to add some code to the html.

Try this

Moe: It could have been a real ugly situation, but luckily I managed to shoot him in the spine.

There will always be a matte around the image in a GIF with transparency. (the white jaggy) The trick is to make the matte color the same color as the background color of your page. You can do this by changing the options in the Matte drop down.

If you can use a PNG-24 you will get the best possible result (for image quality and transparency) but with the compatibility issues with IE.

I acheive the best results for GIFs using 256 colors, Adaptive, Diffusion. (in Save for Web dialog)

Hope it helps.

Wow JT that almost looked like you knew what you were doing!
