Here's a problem we've struggling to deal with this problem:

We have a company logo in jpg format that we use occasionally in issuing press releases in MS Word format. Usually, the person who types up the release uses MS Office 2003. If a person w/ an older version of MS Office (2000, XP) tries to open the document with the jpg logo in there, it crashes the app. Has anyone seen or heard of this type of behavior, and what would be a good solution/workaround?

Have you tried to actually bring the JPG itself into a document - as opposed to opening a document with already in it?

Yes. I've created documents by bringing the JPG itself into the document. It works fine. Here's what's strange. I have computers in the office that has Office 2003 and Office XP.

If I create a document by bringing the JPG itself into the document using Word 2003, then Word XP crashes while reading the document. Word 2003 can read it.

If I create a document by bringing the JPG itself into the document using Word XP, then Word XP and Word 2003 can open it fine.

It's kinda a waste to upgrade everyone (and there's quite a bit of people) to Office 2003 just because of one stupid little JPG, but does anyone have any ideas?

hookamasta,
I've come across this before and there appears to be a hotfix for it for Office XP. If you look here you'll find details of the fix. I think this may pertinent to your case as it says:
If you open a document in Office XP that contains JPEG images, one of the following symptoms may occur: • Colors in the JPEG images do not show as their correct color.
• Changing the zoom setting of the document does not correct the incorrect colors.
• When you try to change the zoom setting of the document, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you view the details of the error message, you find an error signature that is similar to the following:Application Name Application Version Module Name Module Version Offset
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Winword.exe 10.0.5911.0 Mso.dll 10.0.5821.0 0031a980

Hope this helps.
