jpg backgrounds, xml and flash

Hi, I am using a flash file, which loads in jpg images via xml. Everything works fine!!

But, the images I am loading are jpgs and they have a white background. But what I want is for their backgrounds to be transparent. It never looks good with a big white box background.

Is there a way I can use xml with my pics and get rid of the background of the images? Is it true that xml only works with jpgs?
If so, is there any way to make the background transparent? I hope someone has some insight into this for me. Thanks

did that - and changed the xml file. But the second I put yadayadyad.png in the xml file - they no longer were pulled up in flash - Just didn't show up.
