jpeg in Background layer *not* greying out

Hi
I'm using FreeHand9, Windows (XP home)

Formerly,
images (bitmap, whatever) would grey out when you put them in a background layer. (I draw/copy them so being greyed out is very helpful)

As the title says, this isnt happening any more - I really miss it
I've looked through the settings to see if anything would have an influence here but couldnt find anything

I've looked at overprint settings and setting image to overprint or not but doesnt make a difference

Anyone got any ideas ?
