I received an email with a VBScript file attachement. Nothing seemed to be happening when I tried to open the attachment. I then discovered that all of the jpg and some of the gif files (over 1,000 files) were converted to VBScript file type and I cannot open them.

Help!!!

?
Converted to VBScript file type?
Did it just change the name of the files?
Try saving the attachment to disk and then renaming it to whatever.jpg

Im a little confused about what happened though. Is it the attachment that is supposed to be a .jpg or did it go through your hard drive and change all of your images on your hard drive when you tried to open the VBScript attachment?

Or maybe somehow your file types got changed to associate .jpg and .gif with VBScript instead of images.

Is this on NT/2000 or 95/98?

HA HA! klee you just got an I LOVE YOU virus, I would suggest to look at registry (HKEYLOCALMACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run and RunOnce) and look for values that run .vbs files. Remove them. [sig][/sig]

The same thing happened to me. I was opening an mp3 on my network at school, and it changed all my mp3's to .vbs files. Is there anything I can do to change them back?

Sure there is. Follow this link and Symantec will help you out.
In the future you may want to check out .vbs files in an attachment a little closer. You can open then in notepad and check them out before running them. Viewing the code can teach you a lot. Just don't use the information to create another little nasty for someone else. :)

Here's the link.

Hope that helps! ;)
