I am using CR9 to implement report in my ERP project. Since the database is outsourced, the field to link table is a little bit tricky. For example, I need to extract three chars from a field in Table A to join with a field in Table B. How can I do this in Crystal Report?

You can't link tables based on an expression using the visual linking window. You might need a subreport, unless you can write a SQL statement to do this join. Crystal 9 allows you to launch any SQL statement as a command. Ken Hamady, On-site Custom Crystal Reports Training & Consulting
