Hi everybody!

Does anybody know its possible to join mutilple datasets in RS designer?

Kind Regards,

Casey.

Don't think so - you can assign different data sets to different tables within the same report or you can use sub-reports but the only way I have found to get data from multiple datasets into 1 is to do all the work at the database end rather than the report end.

Having said that, this is a new product and I am new to it so I am quite willing / happy to be proved wrong.

SSRS can have multiple unrelated data sources for a single report, but cannot link or join them to a single resultset. Each object on the report gets assigned its own data source and reports on it independently of the other objects. Thus, a report can have multiple points of entry using multiple resultsets. This means it is easier to conceptualize the data that a report is printing because the resultsets are more compartmentalized and this also virtually eliminates the need for sub-reports. The drawback is that there can be crossover between the different resultsets and the database server has more overhead as it processes multiple requests for similar information.

Thanks

J - I was of the same opinion but I have revised it after thinking more about reporting strategies. Subreports are great - especially if you use the caching system.

I have been setting up what I call "component reporting" whereby there are lots of small reports that are used by different areas of the business - these are all refreshed and cached each night. They can then be used as subreports in numerous different reports without having to re-design or re-query the data. This makes for very efficient report building and data retrieval processes....

Thanks for the infomation Gents!

Sounds like I'll have to bat my head against ODBC data sources in SQL again <sigh>.

Thanks again!

The only problem that I have had with sub-report is that you can not export or print them.

cannot print them ???

Datasets can't be linked, but I have found that you can pass parameters gotten from one DS to another. I did that in my data dictionary. Passed params between about 3 datasets, actually.

Is that what you meant?
