join domain issue

on the newest samba version on RH 9: I seem to be able to join the domain using w2k. I get the "welcome to the test.com domain" message. But after I restart I get an error when trying to log in: (i dont know the exact message, as I am not at the machine)

I have read that you must add the compouter to the domain prior to joining. So this is what I do:
>smbpasswd -a root
>adduser theComputerName$
>smbpasswd -a -m theComputerName

Am i missing something? Correct commands?
