hi
i am working in IT in ireland. i am MCSA,MCSE and CCNA. i was working for a digital print providers who also had a small IT section where i looked after the inhouse IT and also customers i.e. SBS ,exchange etc. i had a fully expensed car and about 45k dollars.i considered myself bored and moved job to a small IT consultancy company. i am now on 55k with mileaage allowance. they are doing a lot of work i dont know anything about i.e.sql , filemaker, building cisco networks etc.im under lots of pressure and dont know if ill be able to sink or swim. do you think i made a mistake. my old job might not have been challenging but was secure. im 26 and have a mortgage

I would say only you can know if you made a mistake, for all that it sounds like an obvious comment.

Presumably at the interview you were (at least partly) honest about your experience, so if you are being asked to do things outside of your knowledge maybe you can ask for help / training / books to help you out?

The question should be [red]Is it worth trying to do?[/red] not [blue] Can it be done?[/blue]

You're 26, you're young and you're smart. New jobs can often be a bit of a nightmare when the skills involved change drastically, but look upon these as learning opportunities.

It will get easier!

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

thanks guys. you are right, i know im not giving it much time but we only have a team of two people. amd the other guy is a cisco guy only. i honestly do know my stuff. i just dont like being on my own in the team, im used to have another microsoft guy with me. thanks

Ah the sink or swim technique.

I had Computer Telephony thrown my way just over a year ago and now I'm the company "expert".
PS you'll need "Just for men" soon...lol

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

Lol, Stu.

ha ha. thanks guys. do you know any good places i can get info on setting up webservers (the infrastructure) or do ye know about them

All the above are good comments.

If you're your young, start swimming. Don't sink. Even though everything seems intimidating, start making sense of it.

Sometimes too the best way to learn something is to start fresh with it.

everything does seem intimidating. im getting to know things already though. i jus feel very insecure with a mortgage etc. my last job was very secure albeit not going very far....

With an MCSE, I trust you have decent see, learn, apply skills. Throw in some reference books, ms press or otherwise and you'll be set.

These situations are when you'll be applying your talents the most. I was thrown into doing some on-the-side networking job and found out it was a mess and I was stumped. I hit google, friends, and the noggin and figured things out. Nothing beats breaking everything down and rebuilding it...

As far as the mortgage, don't worry about that. There are millions of options out there to cover that cost, it even includes working at BestBuy. :)

No Risk = No gain

yeah, thanks a lot . you make a lot of sense.
