Hi all,

I've been reading thru documents talking about these two Filesystem types and the difference between them. But for some of the documents, they say that JFS is optimal use for 32-bit kernel environment and JFS2 is best used with 64-bit. My question is, will JFS2 perform better in 32-bit kernel? because for now we are running oracle8i in 32-bit kernel but we will go for oracle9i in 64-bit so i don't want to change the filesystem then!!!

any recommendation?

Thanks

regards,
Khalid

Oracle uses AIO quite heavily and it is not the ordinary way you access data in a filesystem.

Now we use a bunch of Oracle 10g servers on JFS with 64 bit kernel an it runs perfectly.

Even though if you have the time to play, the best is to try both options with some kind of oracle benchmarks.

I think both behave quite well in 32bit kernel, but JFS2 works better in a 64bit kernel. And if you need large FSs, JFS2 is the way to go, because there's lower overhead re disk space.

Thanks for your replies

So now how can i confince my superiour that my choice for going to JFS2 on 32-bit kernel is the right step?

There's also a fix to use Oracle 8i on AIX with 64bit kernel (that is a special 64-bit version of the oracle Post/Wait kernel extension - google for it, you'll find it)

That being said, Oracle 8 is already out of support if I'm not mistaken... ;-(

Using raw disks ha not too much performance impact, not more than 4%. Often the less comfort does not worth the performance increase by using raw disks.

And yes, Oracle 8 is unsupported for a while.
