I am a UNIX novice trying to connect an HP Jetdirect EX Plus to a Unix lan/wan.

the infernal thing works fine under windoze, but the unix hp manager will not print to it. (it will ping just fine).

additionally, the printer i create and add to the hp spooler never shows up in the UNIX printer manager.

Is this normal, or have I broken something?

thanks for any help or suggestions.

Cheesedog,

Connect your printer to the Jetdirect EX Plus. Go into scoadmin, hp network printer manager, run options 1 through 6. On option 6 check which printer interface your are using. If you are trying to connect a laser printer models IIIsi through the 8100 use laserjethpnp.
Check /etc/hosts, make sure the printer is listing in your hosts file, first by IP address then by printer name.
Then check lpstat -p to see if the printer is enable.
Hopes this helps

OK, I guess this is as good as time as any to explain WHY I keep telling people to use netcat instead of the HP tools.

The HP stuff is, plain and simple, broken. Don't just take my word for it: search in comp.unix.sco.misc and you'll see that those of us who do this for a living, who see hundreds and hundreds of different sites every year consistently say the same thing: DO NOT USE THE HP PRINTING TOOLS. You aren't going to find a single professional consultant who disagrees with that. We disagree about other things, but it is a solid wall of opinion on this: use netcat, period.

Time after time I go into sites having various stupid, flakey printing problems. I rip out the HPNP junk and replace it with netcat. Instant resolution, no more problems.

I think I'll stick this in the FAQ later..

Hey

First you have to add IP-adress and name to /etc/hosts.
I use rlpconf to make a new printer, 3 simple questions to answer:
printer name, local or remote printer and hostname, in this case ex. printer = hpjet1, remote printer, host =hpjet1.
rlpconf updates your /etc/printcap and other staff.

i don't if it's right or wrong but it works

ps. my sco 5.0.4 doesn't know netcat.

(sigh)

Yes. It "works". Sometimes. But it also doesn't work in a lot of situations or causes flakey problems in others. SCO's TA's are full of articles about problems with lpd printing. Sometimes that's all you can use, but HP JetDirect is certainly not that case.

And yes, I know your 5.0.4 doesn't "know" netcat. Please read
