I am working on some outside plant direct buried cable and have a need to splice some 18awg. Stranded wire in some hand holds. I have some of the little jelly filled scotch locks that I use every once in a while for Cat3 cables and thought they would be good for this too. Do they make them for 18awg wire? I also would like to install the small splice case with encapsulate on this when I am through but I am not sure who makes them. I have seen them before, (I believe it was on a 6 pair cable) but have never used them. Here in Louisiana anything in the ground will get wet (yes even in conduit) and I am trying to fix what someone else has done. I personally don't splice anything, but some has and it is getting corroded.

Thanks for your suggestions.

heres the 3m chart , pick out what style you need it looks like several will do 18 ga

I have some direct bury splice enclosures I use , dont recall who makes them though there down at the warehouse as I dont use them often.

basically its a gel filled pipe you put the two spliced cable ends in the cap and screw it down into the gel .

I have seen something similar at home depot sold for splicing electric wire.

Nice post skip (a star for you). I tried to find that, but had no luck with a quick search.

Mikey- I have used direct bury splices that are circular, I can’t remember who makes them...we always called them hockey pucks. Here is a link to what I think Skip is referring to...

Thanks for your post guys, and thanks for the 3M chart skip555. I looked at the 3M link before but I didint see anything as large as the link you posted. That should take care of the splice itself. The small splice cases that I am referring to are about 8" long and are made like a plastic enclosed tube with a cap. Again here in Louisiana a good splice is only good for about 3 years, but that will beat what they have now. (Electric tape on wire nuts and silicone) LOL. Talk about job security.

i've used a product from Graybar,by Preformed line products, filled closure it looks like the product number is 8006039

I've used Preformed Line Product fiber splice cases before. Great products. I would think PLP would have what you need.

Speaking of butt splices---there is an in-line splice for a pair 18-26 awg and it is gel filled --- it is rectangular and about 1 1/2 inches long by about a half inch wide--clear blue plastic --- if you look at it sideways, it looks like a car with its hood and trunk open. (probably a pathetic description) -- I thought I had given a s manufacturer and stock number once in a thread but I will be damned if I can find it. I swore I would never loose the box with the information on it either............[sadeyes]

If anyone knows this product--I would sure appreciate a stock number---they are really very handy.

Thanks

Not it Skip555 but it resembles the UDW2 without the end pipes. It really is a terrific product, damn I can't even "google" it.

Thanks

Just an update for you guys. I ended up calling 3m's technical support guy's. The telecomm/networking side didn't really make any that would work for the 18awg wire. The tech with the telecomm/networking side called the tech with the electical side. I ended up with a Scotchlok pn. 314. Looks just like our regular jelly filled connectors but will support 14 to 22 awg wire. The preformed super-serviseal closures are pn. 8006039 and are about $8.00 each. Thanks again for all your help with this and hopefully someone may not have to look as hard to find these again. Have a good one all, Mike.
