Has anyone here tried using JBoss? What are your thoughts? Any comparisons to BEA - aside from the price?

I have used both JBoss and WebLogic. Though I have never used JBoss in Production, just development and playing around. Overall JBoss is a very good App Server and I found it extremely easy to setup. On the otherhand, I found the lack of quality documentation frustrating. In comparison, BEA offers a ton of documentation on WebLogic and some of it is actual quite good. I just spent the last week preparing for the WebLogic Developer exam, so I have read through nearly all of the WebLogic docs and I was very pleased.

As far as performance goes, I can't really comment on WebLogic vs. JBoss. Though WebLogic 7.0 beta did post the highest results so far in ECPerf. Unfortunately since JBoss is not J2EE Certified I doubt we will see ECPerf numbers.

The other problem with JBoss is that since it is open-source and not J2EE Certified, it tends to be difficult to persuade management into going with JBoss as the App Server. The best I have been able to do is convince them to go with JBoss for development (one on each developer's machine) and deploy to either WebLogic or WebSphere.

Obviously you can't beat JBoss's price, especially compared to WebLogic which is probably the most expensive of J2EE Application Servers.
