We inherited a couple of Vipers. They have win98 on them and we can not get auto logon to work. Usually we use tweakui, but this does not seem to phase it. Am I missing some querk in the network setup, like whether or not it should be micosoft logon or something else? Call me spoiled but it has been a while since I have setup a 98 machine since I use Drive Image to restore operating systems with the hardware we sell and service that use 98 for the past couple of years.

Though this is not the most secure solution, you can always opt for a blank password. When using a blank password for FOH win98 terminals, the terminals will automatically logon without prompting for a password. The downside is, this presents a security risk for the back of house, since they'll have to be a user account with no password. Realistically speaking, the risk is minimal for two reasons:

1) An intruder would still have to know the user account. If you used something obscure, like BOSVIPER as a logon, doubtful anyone is going to guess that.

2) I think the days of "password guessing" to hack into computers are kind of behind us (assuming anyone would even want to break into a restaurant PC). It seems much more likely that unauthorized access to a network is accomplised via some type of worm, trojan, or security flaw in an OS.

Anyway, you won't want to use tweakui at all if you go this route. A possible work around for you.

The BOH services have to run with passwords. When I deleted all the users but one and deleted its password, it can not access the boh unless someone logs into the boh since it is prompted for a password after every reboot to connect to the server's hdd. I'll hack at it some more this week, I just need to relearn the work around for this and I just can't remember what it is right now.

To clear the current user names and passwords, delete *.PWL from the Windows folder to remove all users. Select Start/Shutdown. Select 'Close all programs and log in as a different user' and click Yes. Windows logs the current user out and prompts for a user name and password. Enter the desired user and password and log in to Windows.

For example, if you have a system with Windows NT®, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 on the file server and Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Edition (Me) on the FOH terminals and you only require minimal security, then you can just enable the Windows guest account on the file server, grant BOOTDRV access to everyone, and just log into the FOH terminals using a user name with no password

I got it. To use TweakUI the network had to be set to client for mircosoft networks and not winlogon. Because my services run with a user that has to have a password to work, the 98 machines, if they logon using the same user and password, then they automatically connect to the service without being prompted for a password. The guest account thing would have prbably worked, I didn't think to check that.
