Javasrcipt to initialize a field

I have a form that I use to evaluate items in a room. On the form are several check boxes. Each box is worth a different value.

I'd like to do 2 things.
[tt]
1. When a box is checked, initialize a text field with
the point value for that box.

2. Hide or grey the other check boxes based on the
checked state of the box selected.[/tt]

I'm a novice at Javascript and haven't been able to get the desired result. Any help to get me to my goal will be greatly appreciated.
