javascript works on IP but not computer name

Hi all, i've had a rather troubling problem since i got my new Dell laptop late last fall. For some reason, I am unable to use javascript on my machine when browsing websites that are hosted from my machine and using my computer's namesake. I do not receive any errors, it just won't trigger. However, if i browse the same websites using my IP address the javascript works perfectly fine. I find this a rather major annoyance and would appreciate any ideas on what might be causing this/how to solve it. I'm running windows 2000 and office 2000, and have all the latest service packs.
