I've got a web page which includes a Java applet. Some of my visitors are complaining that when they visit the site the applet doesn't load and simply displays a blank box. I've found out that this is because they haven't got a Java VM installed by default.

Bearing in mind that the majority of my visitors know little about the technicalities of Internet Explorer and other browers is there a way to determine whether or not the VM is installed and suppress the code accordingly via the scripts which invoke the applet in the first place?

Thanks Dian, but the problem is that some of my visitors might not have any plug-in installed at all and wouldn't have the first clue how to do it. This is what I need to determine automatically ... if they have a plug-in installed then I run the applet, if they haven't then I suppress the code.

I'm not quite sure that's the correct forum to post.

By "suppres the code" you mean getting the applet to do something different or just not executing the applet at all?

Cheers,
Dian

I mean just not execute the applet. It's only cosmetic!

I'm not quite sure that's the correct forum to post.

I'd say it's the best forum to post in. Doing detection client-side could theoretically be done in any supported language... but since JS is the most widely supported, it made more sense to suggest that forum than, say, the VBScript forum.

I think my Java background betrayed me.

Sorry Dan, no offence.

I was thinking on adapting the applet, not just hiding it, so the Java forum was the correct one.

Cheers,
Dian
