Some web sites I go to gives this error message
" to display this page correctly you need to download and install the following components"
"java virtual machine"

so I click download. It downloads then I get this error
"The microsoft virtual machine you are attempting to download and install is a protected system component and can only be updated with a later release of the operating system or service pak. I went to compusa to get it, & they say I need to upgrade to win-xp. Anybody have any ideas on this?

You don't need to upgrade. Microsoft has what you need:

As they tell you there near the bottom, you need to install service pack 1 or 2 before using the hotfix download there. They provide links to download the service packs.

Make a note of this and give it to those boneheads at Compusa next time you're there. They either have no clue what to do or were just trying to sell you something.

Kento! the fix stated in your earlier post did not work. I installed sp2 then installed the hotfix. When I attempt to download and install the virtual machine I get the same error. Any other ideas? When I attempt to view the web pages I get the same error concerning the java.

I have excactly the same problem. I suspect it's somethig to do with the registry. I have no solution yet

i am having the same problem. and the fix didnt work for me either.

What version of IE are you using? You need to have at least 5.5. After you install it, you should have "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools" under Add/Remove Programs. Double-click it and it'll give you the option to "Add Components". There you should find the Java Virtual Machine.

Alternatively, you could go to a command prompt and type "jview" and hit enter. This will tell you the version of Java you are running.

Once you get the version, go here:

u have to Configure Internet Explorer so that it does not automatically use items that show active content, such as vertical marquees or animations:

Internet Explorer 3.x :

Click Options on the View menu, click the Security tab, and then click to clear the Enable ActiveX Controls And Plug-Ins check box under Active Content .

Click OK .

Internet Explorer 4.0, 4.01 :

On the View menu, click Internet Options , click the Security tab, click Custom , and then click Settings .

Click Disable under Download unsigned Active X controls , Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting , Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe , Download signed ActiveX controls , Run ActiveX controls and plugins , click OK , and then click OK again.

Internet Explorer 5.0, 5.01 :

On the Tools menu, click Internet Options , click the Security tab, and then click Custom Level .

In the Settings box, click Disable under Download signed ActiveX controls , Download unsigned ActiveX controls , Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe , Run ActiveX controls and plugins , and Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting .

Click OK , and then click OK again.

If you are able to load the Web page after performing this step, the problem is being caused by active content that the Web page contains.

Thanks for all your help. None of the solutions worked. Had to re-install windows.

Well we got this figured out at my shop

Seems that there was some confusion between MS JVM and Sun JVM so we toggled back and forth between the 2 a few times in internet options and the problem has disappeared.

This might be an alternate solution
