I heard it was possible to write java stored procedures (load java...). Does the standard release support that ? Do I need to download things ? What about the perfs ? I intend to perform some heavy calculation. Should I go tle old faithful PL/SQL way or may I use java instead ?

HI there ,

From Oracle 8.1.5 onwards you have the option of Java stored procedures at your fingertips any time.
Check if you have installed the Oracle JVM , if its not installed , u can install that by running the sql ,
$ORACLE_HOME/javavm/install/initjvm.sql

Refer to the Oracle Java developer's guide for the details .

Thats it . Your Oracle JVM is up and running .

Just my 2 cents: in some Oracle releases initjvm is not the only script that should be launched to install java, so I suggest to look for specific details on metalink.

Regards, Dima
