Hi
Im thinking of learning a new language and have narrowed it down to the above 2. I already know the Microsoft stuff like ASP, VB, VBScript, SQL Server. Which would you advise and why. Whats involved in learning each of them (including difficulty) ?
thanks

well, in my very humble opinion, I would learn C++ first, then delve in to Java (if your up to it). Java and C++ are *VERY* similar. Some file/command references differ, but the general ideology is very much the same. Once you learn one, the other will be just a matter of picking up the nuances...

From what I have see in your skillset Java would be a good choice. Java (in my opinion) is becoming the language of the internet. As the previous poster stated both are very similar. But I like java better. Plus you can easily use java for web development. JSP and servlets are not too hard to develop, so you might even begin to duplicate some of what you have done in ASP (etc) into JSP and servlets. Mike Wills

What do you want to do?

If you want to work for a big financial corporation and see how fast you can process 50,000 stock transactions a day, C++ is your drug.

If you want to be on the web or program general business apps, well, you get the idea.

Yes, Java and C++ are VERY similar, however most people who know both seem to learn the two alphabetically, if only because C++ existed before Java and C++ is the language of choice in most BS and MS curricula.

As far as which is easier (not less valuable), it's my unprofessional opinion that C++ wields a heavier sledgehammer.
