I am a newbie to Java and I want to start programming in Linux and Windows. I want to know what I need to download for each platform?
Are the programs I write in one OS be used on the other?
Are the commands the same on either OS?

Hi sperki, welcome to Java!
For each OS you will need the according JDK for it, all of which can be found at the Sun site, link below:
You will need some way to write the programs, a text editor, IDE, etc, and a way to run them, command line or IDE. What you choose is programmer preference, though I would suggest an IDE since you're a beginner.
The programs can be used on either OS without technically changing any code, the "Write Once, Run Anywhere" isn't quite true yet [smile]. The commands are the same for all OS.
Let us know if you ahve any more questions,
