Hello:
I was wondering if someone could help clarify something for me. I've been trying to understand how something works and I think I need to hear it in plain english.
Let me start by saying this; The other day I was surfing the web and I ran across an online calculator which could access "server side" .dll files (which turned out to be some sort of mathematical tables/libraries) and use them to calculate various income tax equations. From what I have been able to understand, this online calculator was a "java applet" running within a web page and it used some type of "ASP" programming to retrieve the .dll files it needed from the server.
This calculator was also available in a software package and I downloaded a trial copy to experiment with. The website also explained that the .dll library had to be downloaded and installed on your computer first for the trial software to function properly. That part made sense to me. This company also offered a SDK (software development kit) which could be used to experiment and test on newly developing software. The SDK included java, c, asp, and delphi, toolkits. I downloaded them and played around with the java tools and tried to understand them. I even downloaded a java runtime environment and actually got through the first step of java programming. But that took me forever. Uhg!
I'm not a programmer so this is where it got very confusing for me. My goal was to get this calculator to run on a PDA, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. I knew that this SDK offered java tools and I felt that a PDA could probably run this program in a java environment (especially since the online version of the calculator was already a java applet). At least I hoped it could be done.
The file library (the .dlls) are less than 2 megs in size and even the desktop program itself was only 3.5 megs in size. So I felt the file sizes were not too excessive for a PDAs abilities. So my big question now is this: How can I get this calculator to work on a PDA and can the whole thing be stored on a memory card and inserted into the pda and run from there? This may sound simple to someone "in the know" but to me it's too confusing. Can anybody help?
Thanks a Lot for any help in undestanding this.
