java error during install

During installation of JRE v 1.3.1_05 on a Windows XP SP2 PC I receive the following error "Error while registering the plugin registry keys".
It appears to complete the installation but I discover when using my web browser that certain areas of the site are not available.
I want to strip java off my PC and install from fresh but this does not improve the reinstall and the same error occurs. I have removed java through add/remove programs and I have followed the steps from the following website;

to clean the registry.

Has anyone else had this problem/error? Does anyone know how to work around this?

No idea, but a question:
Why do you install that antique jre?
afaik new JVMs (1.5.0) execute older classes without problems.

That would be an ideal and utopic world.

In the real world, compatibility is not fully provided. The differences may be slightly, but sometimes they're pretty visible.

if a later version of java still doesnt install, i would check to see that you dont have some program like spybot preventing applications adding to the registry without your permission. likewise with anti-spyware or virus guard programs. i would also check to see if your firewall is stopping it, not a big possibility but worth checking non the less.
