I have a PC that cannot run the java applet that tries to run when you click on any time zone there. There is a java animation (a clock) that is supposed to run when you click on a time zone on the map.

The error message that appears on the web page is: "Possible browser java error or a firewall stops the time applet." It has a "problems" button, which I viewed. It states that you need to open port 8013 in the firewall, and/or update the java.

I have updated the java, disabled the Windows firewall, and ensured that port 8013 was open through the router (although other PCs behind the same router work fine).

The following is what occurs in the java console:

minutesOffset = -300
host=measuring...
nTries=0, nGood=0
Atomic Web Clock, Version 4.0
National Institute of Standards and Technology
Time and Frequency Division
325 Broadway
Boulder, Colorado 80303
davidlee@boulder.nist.gov

minutesOffset = -300
host=measuring...
nTries=0, nGood=0
errorBoolean is: true
access delay = 21109
nTries=1, nGood=0
errorBoolean is: true
access delay = 21110
nTries=2, nGood=0
c is not valid

I have tried moving down the security setting within Internet Explorer to "Medium". Still nothing.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Dale

Well, you seem to have done all the right things things.
The clock works for me under XP Pro, IE7 and Java standard addition 6 Version 1.6.0 build 1.6.0_03-b05

What happens if you go to and click on do I have java? (to the right of the download button)? Does it confirm you have java?

There is a possibility that java has somehow become corrupted on the machine. Try re-installing java? Go to add/remove programs in control panel & uninstall java. Uninstall each update in order and then for good measure re-boot & then re-install java from
I presume there is no possibility that you have a virus? Another long shot would be a problem with the network card or even that winsock or the tcp/ip stack is corrupt?

Thanks for the response!

I have Java standard edition 6 Version 1.6.0 build 1.6.0_03-b05 as well. When I go to java.com and click on do I have java and verify the installation, it says "Congratulations, you have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 3)

I uninstalled every update of java I had from add / remove programs, rebooted, then installed the latest java.

I ran Winsockfix to correct any winsock errors.

Still, the same problem.

Any other thoughts?

Dale

Purge saved java files from your machine. In the systray next to the clock, right-click the Java icon, go to Open Control Panel, when it comes up, click the Settings button under Temporary Internet Files, then Delete Files, Then OK. I've had a lot of times where java apps hang and clear up by doing this. Good luck!

Thanks for the response!

I found the Java temporary Internet files right where you said. I deleted them ... but have the same error.

btw ... I have also ran a complete scan with AVG (updated definitions file) and found no viruses. Have also done a spyware scan with Adaware.

Another symptom (don't know if it will help or not) is that after I go to time.gov, and the applet tries to run, I can no longer go to another site by typing in a URL in the address bar at the top and pressing enter. The URL types in just fine, but you go nowhere. If I click on a link, it goes just fine. This is only after the time.gov applet has attempted to load.

Other thought?

Thanks.

Couple of things:

Can you test in FireFox and see if it works there?
Can you run a Java app on any other page?
Run IE7 without any addins, see if it clears up.
Run HijackThis and see if there's anything hijacking the browser.
Delete the temporary internet files in IE7 as well.
Go ahead and try uninstalling and re-installing Java, even if java.com says it's there, it may be corrupted.
If it ever worked, try a system restore point back to that time.

Just a few suggestions, but something should clear it up.

FireFox --- same result

Run Java apps in other page -- yes, I can log onto yahoo games and play games that load java apps.

Deleted temporary internet files within IE7

I had already uninstalled and reinstalled Java.

Disabled all IE addins (except Java) -- same result.

I will run hijackthis and post the log.

Sorry, I'm at a loss. Everything looks good. I don't see anything in HijackThis that looks funny, maybe someone else will see something I've missed.

I missed the part of the post where you said "same thing in FireFox" Are you sitting behind a firewall? Either software or hardware, you'll need to open the port.

Could also try adding time.gov to your trusted sites in IE7, that sets security all the way down for just that one site.

The PC has a CA firewall, which I have disabled. I have also tried opening port 8013 on the firewall. There is also a router fireall ... on which I have also opened the same port. But, there are other PCs behind the same router in which time.gov works just fine.

I will try adding it to the trusted sites zone.

I am at a loss as well ... and the individual is getting anxious for their PC to be returned.

For what its worth (not a lot possibly) I don't recognise the following entries. I presume they are CA related.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcprs32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mdmcls32.exe
O23 - Service: lxcj_device - - C:\WINDOWS\system32\lxcjcoms.exe
O23 - Service: WinSock Svchost Manager (WinSvchostManager) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcprs32.exe

I googled svcprs32.exe and found this interesting thread.

So I think if I was in your shoes I would try uninstalling CA and see if that resolved the problem - then re-install CA and see if the problem came back.

stduc,

Thanks for the response. I have since uninstalled the entire CA suite of products, and the issue did not resolve. The PC had Norton on it previously, so I ran the Norton Removal Tool, and that did not help either. FYI, I have put time.gov on the trusted sites list as well.

Interesting, there are 4 PCs in this network (behind the same router). Two of them CAN run the time.gov applet w/o any problem, and two cannot.

I came across the same problem with 1 of my 2 PCs on my Home Network today. One could run the time.gov applet and one could not. The one PC that could run the time.gov applet had Java (Version 6 Update 2)installed. The one PC that could NOT run the time.gov applet had Java (Version 6 Update 3) installed (Today was the 1st time I went to the time.gov website after updating the Java application to Version 6 Update 3). I went to Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and selected "Java(TM) 6 Update 3" and clicked on "Remove". Once the Java Version 6 Update 3 was successfully removed, I WAS able to run the time.gov applet on both PCs. The PC in question did not even require a Reboot. I did not have to do anything else. Hope this helps.

Just to clarify... I am now running Java Version 6 Update 2 on both of my PCs and they both run the time.gov applet fine. When I updated the Java installation to Version 6 Update 3 on 1 of the PCs I received the same error as Designware did in his initial post. All I did was "Remove" Java(TM) Version 6 Update 3 from the problem PC and left all of the other previous versions of Java installed. This corrected the problem for me.

UPButcher,

That was it. However, I went back to Version 6 update 2, and it still didn't work. I went back to Version 5, update 13, and all of a sudden it worked.

Thank you for your post.
