Java Applet Window is Grayed Out

In IE4SP2, I have a user who gets a gray box with nothing in it when he clicks on a link that opens another window. Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling IE, but that didn't do the trick. Would updating the Virtual Machine have anything to do with these errors? I am guessing that it is something wrong with that component, but thought I'd see if anyone else had seen something like this in the past.
