Display will vary widely depending on Operating System, Monitor / window size, and background color.
There is some discussion that the Times New Roman and Arial fonts on Windows are inherently lousy anyway (and there is much truth in that discussion). While Cory's answer is one way to accurately display, you may want to try different fonts, backgrounds and sizes and test on multiple browsers and Operating Systems.
Always supply a list of alternate fonts. good luck.

I for one am getting a bit tired of times roman and arial. I generated some HTML with all the fonts on my machine so I could make up an intelligent list of fonts alternatives. It is not only important to choose a similar font but in some cases it is also necessary to use a similar sized font.
I know in CSS fonts can be made to be the same size but it takes a lot of work to come up with the conversion factor. Instead I decided to choose fonts of similar type and size.
It would be nice to know what apple folks have as compatible alternatives.

Actually.. .I've updated the code into an FAQ which is more help, as it shows a demo of each font:

It would certainly stop you having to update your font list anytime you installed or removed a font.
OK - so it only works in IE, but hey - them's the breaks ;o)

That's great BillRay. Take a star. I hasten to add though that I did generate the HTML programmatically but since I used COBOL it was pointless to post the code since it is a compiled language requiring a runtime.
You code has given me an idea how to do the whole thing (categorizing, resorting etc.) all in JS.
