We have never had remote workers and now they want to roll out a couple with J179 sets. I need to know what needs to be done onsite to allow the phone into the network, and what to put into the phone. I know this is a somewhat basic question but since IT and Telecom here dont work good together I want to tell them here you do these and I will do these. Please help, and its much appreciated..

Are you talking H323 using VPN connection or SIP using Avaya SBC and AADS?

See my post on Ray Baums. You will need an E911 solution if your are deploying remote worker hardphones.

Exactly what has to be done is dependent on which type of deployment you will be doing and what software version you are on. SIP via ASBCE or H.323 via VPN. Either way there are a lot of moving parts. H.323 via VPN may be a non-starter depending on what you have available for access concentrators. No, the phones can not use something like a zscalar VPN and they do not support installing any custom client software. Most customers are migrating to SIP remote worker.

Thanks guys and we have moved to SIP and the J179's will be Sip phones

I would highly recommend involving a business partner or perform additional research on the avaya support site in addition to mapping out all your requirements and functionality. If you want users to enter in their Email instead of having to enter in a URL then you will need RFC 6763 on your Public DNS.
