IVR prompts barge in on itself in Speech Reco

Any ideas on why an IVR Speech Reco application prompt would barge in on the call. I can lower the volume output of the prompts to mask the problem but I'm really trying to determine the "root" cause. The IVR is using analog lines and I suspect there is a line quality issue that is causing the IVR to actually hear itself when prompts are spoken. This the barge in occurs.
Is there anybody who may have some insights on possible "line quality" root causes for analog?
