We have two VLANS (subnets) separated by a router - staff and students respectively. Each of these has a PDC and two BDCs. Each PDC runs DHCP and WINS for its subnet.

On the student PDC the event log is constantly reporting that it has issued a NACK to the client (mac address) IP number.

Firstly what the hell is a NACK? and secondly why is my server so being generous in issueing them to clients!?!

Can anyone help?!

I´m not into dhcp that much. maybe this information is to some use

a dhcpnak is issued from the server when the client's notion of network address is incorrect (e.g. client has moved to new subnet or has a fault subnet-mask) or client's lease has expired.

A acknoledgment once in a while is inpossible to escape.

Is the student pdc delivering ip:s to the other subnet?

If I were a server and tried to deliver ip:s (dhcpack:s) to a subnet and the router wouldn't let my broadcasts get through... I would write something in my event log. Perhaps that is something you must look into.

take a look at your dhcp-scope:s

also check <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> - click your way over to dhcp. There is always some useful links on that homepage.

Nostradamus
soren.danielsson@liv.se

Thanx for the help guys, in response to Nostradamus' query regarding whether the student DHCP server is issuing ips to the other subnet, no it isn't. Each subnet is served by its own DHCP server and nether the twain shall meet!

I've looked at the links you both given me and they seem potententially helpfull, I'll tell you if I solve the problem! (do I use explanation marks to much?!?!!!) (and question marks??? (DOH!! DOHH!!! ARRGGHH!!!)

BTW, a NACK is "No acknowledgement" while an ACK is an "acknowlegement". (Leftovers from serial ports?????).

James P.
