Dear friends,

I am a MCSE and know a bit about unix, now I want to learn Unix, can anyone tell which flavor can give me good job openings and which is in great demand.

Regards

Take your pick, I think it kinda depends on what you want to do career wise. I would look around at the ads in your area, or in the location you want to move to. I work with AIX, DG-UX, Solaris , HP-UX, SCO, and Linux myself. As far as Sysadmin, The Unix forms seem to bring more than Linux when it comes to salary, at least in N.C. where I live.

Most Unix variations have much in common, so if you learn one, you can pick up another later on. To gain experience I would start with Linux. Its free, you can install it at home and learn quite a bit from it. My path started with Linux and then I started working with Solaris. I have a lab at home that I have built over time with several different versions of Unix.

If you want to setup Unix on an intel box, you can use SCO, or Solaris 8. Solaris 8 is free, however I would not recommend it as a introduction to Unix , since the install is not for the Novice in my opinion. Linux on the other hand is not that hard to setup, and get working.

I think as time goes on , more companies that are trying to cut cost will move from Unix to Linux, since its more cost effective in many cases. But agian that is my opinion, but I see it everyday.

Since you have a Microsoft background you may want to look down the road at getting into Migration , IE Windows to Unix, I see some demand for that in my area. I do Database support on most of the platforms I work with, There is a good deal of demmand for that, especially with the U2 Products. SQL is a major plus too.

Hope that helps.
