I have Samba 2.2.2 running on SCO Open Server. It takes too long to access the Unix server and sometimes is not accesible. I get error //server is not available . The specified network name is not longer available.

or.

//server is not available. The network path was not found.

I checked Samba through swat and is running. I have refreshed it and it is still running. Any idea ?

I fixed this problem on my SCO boxes with samba 2.2.7a
There is a 2.2.8a binary for OSR here:

OK. I am about to install this patch but this says that "you can install OSS646B on ScoOpen server Release 5.0.4 with RS504C. What should I install first ?

Also, what is a Delopment System on Unix ? The document reads: "Since this supplement patches portions of the Development System, that package must be installed before you install this supplement.

Thank you

Can you post the result of this command ?
swconfig -P
This will show us which patches and supplements are already installed on your box.

So, rs504c is already installed: you can install OSS646B.
The Development system is another package with C compiler, linker and library.
I guessed you don't have it, so the url for binary package.

Do I need to have Development System package installed before installing this OSS646B file ?

Absolutely not.
The cover letter just inform you that if you planed to install the Development package then either you must install the package before the supplement, or uninstall the supplement before installing the package and then reinstall the supplement.

Please forgive for asking dumb questions, but I burned this file into a cd and it does recognize the format. I also copied it into /temp, but I do not know how to install it from software manager since, I only have the cd rom, floppy, loaded software. How do I install it from / ?

Thank you

oh yeah, that was an option as well. but guess what, now I can't open the Software Manager. It says it is already running and I check the processes but I don't know what process software manager it is called, so I do not what name I am looking for. How could I know if this is running ?

Thank you

Reboot your server and hopefully the lock file will be removed.

OK I could not install the path because I do not have space enough so I guess that I won't be able to install samba 2.2.8.

How Do I know how much space Do I have left and how many partitions the server has (if I can talk about partitions on Unix).

man df
I suggest: df -kv

This is the output.
# df -kv
Mount Dir Filesystem blocks used free %used
/stand /dev/boot 15360 8735 6625 57%
# df -v
Mount Dir Filesystem blocks used free %used
/stand /dev/boot 30720 17470 13250 57%

Are you in single user (i.e. maintenance) mode ?
You have no root file system !
I suggest you ask your sysadmin to do the install.
