Hi all,

Any advice is welcomed....
I have worked 4 years during as IT systems engineer, and have developed high skills in IBM systems (AIX 4.X, 5.X) Storage (ESS, SAN, Tivoli Storage Manager ...) Oracle Database etc. ...
I was working in the IT Division of a Telco company with very interesting systems I Have attended trainings abroad on systems which I was working on and this helped me to develop competencies on it ...(in France particular) as my company is in West Africa...

On 2004 I took a leave of absence as I was offered a chevening scholarship by the british government and headed to birmingham, UK for a MBA. It was a very good occasion for me to complete my profile with a business qualification.... My hope was that, it will open me the doors ...

I am back to my former company since the end 2005, but things are not going as I wish ...I am a little bit disappointed .... I think it will be very hectic for me to put in practice what I have grasped form the MBA. My fear is to loose the technical expertise I spent evenings and week-ends to acquire ... I am still in the IT division but caring about IT process. (I am trying to implement ITIL, I have red a lot about it and have the Foundation Certificate ...but I think I am lucking support from the top management ....). These days I am thinking of leaving the company for somewhere else. I am seriously considering to go back to the technical field .... I will be very happy to work in consultancy firm using my technical experience....but consulting is not that developed around here ... Therefore I am considering to apply for the Highly Skilled Migrant Program and go back to UK and try to find my way there ... I think I will better use my skills and the fact that I am bilingual (French/Englich) in a european country or at least in an international group .....

As I went out from the systems 2 years during, do you think this will be hindering for me to secure a IT system engineer position considering my past experience in the field ?

I am thinking of setting for IBM certificates to prove my technical abilities ....is it worth doing it ?

Or should I stick to the ITIL and develop more competencies on it ?

Thanks for any feedback or advise that may help me to set up my mind !

I will be very happy to learn more about experience of technical people (particular IT systems Engineer) who hold a MBA degree !

Thanks for your comments !

My own opinion, in general, is that this stuff requires constant hands-on experience to stay sharp, even short sabbaticals can prove detrimental, I took one a few years ago and had to work very hard to get back up to speed, but maybe others don't have this problem, just my ¢2...

You should be able to get a technical consulting position with your experience and an MBA.

And I don't think taking two years off will hurt you at all.

Good Luck!
